The presidency rotates through the G8 members each year, and 2013 is the UK’s turn. The G8 is made up of countries who have been the richest in the world – Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, USA, and the UK. (Although G8 summits are renowned, some of the world’s largest economies like Brazil, China, and India are all not members.) In June, at Lough Erne, in County Fermanagh, Cameron will host the annual leaders’ summit and choose the global priorities that are discussed. (Topics under discussion will include: combating trade protectionism, cracking down on tax havens and promoting greater government transparency.) German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Russian President Vladimir Putin, US President Barack Obama, and the other world leaders will gather for two days in Northern Ireland for the summit. As prime minister of the presidency holding nation, David Cameron has said the topics under discussion will be discussed in ministerial meetings ahead of the summit. The last time the UK hosted (back in 2005, at Gleneagles), more than 200,000 people marched against world poverty. (This time, the organisers will be hoping for a trouble-free summit in June.) Last time, the G8 proceedings were then overshadowed by the 7-7 bus/underground London bombings.
The only true currency in this bankrupt world is what you share with someone else when you’re uncool.
